Qajar Heritage

A magnificent project of Qajar art in Cannes - France

The Musée de la Castre is located in a medieval castle, overlooking the magnificent bay of Cannes. Its collections gather ancient non European art. The Persian endowment of the Dutch Baron Tinco Martinus Lycklama à Nijeholt, who was passionate about oriental art, was the founding act of the Museum.

The Musée de la Castre is running a project for the restoration of Qajar paintings and objects to bring to light the richness and diversity of Persian culture through an outstanding collection of some 350 objects, mainly from the 1st era of the Qajars (under the reign of Fath Ali Shah: 1797-1834). Donor Baron Lycklama à Nijeholt played a key role in documenting the collection with travelling stories and catalogues. The project will lead to the creation of a new gallery of Qajar art at the Musée de la Castre. All the collection will be able to travel once restored.

The paintings include some gardens views, unique in Western collections. They attest of the Qajars’ capacity to merge Western techniques and local traditions. The collection illustrates the strengthening relations century – economic and political, but also, diplomatic and artistic- between Europe and the Eastern World in the 19th century. The Qajar saw these ties with Europe as a way to confirm Persia’s place among the great nations and to open the country to the modern world.

The Musée de la Castre is currently showing an exhibition called “La vie mystérieuse des chefs d’oeuvre qajares” till 25 May 2014. The exhibition displays paintings which have already been restored as well as information on the techniques used for restoration.  A video on the restoration of the paintings is available clicking on the following link: http://www.cannes.com/fr/actualites/annee-2013/decembre/video-sur-la-restauration-des-uvres-qajares.html
